From the Introduction: "...How do we maintain Vermont's historic character that underpins the sense of place cherished by its citizens and visitors? How do we simultaneously participate in job creation, bring our children back to Vermont - or keep them here - for good paying, meaningful work, and strengthen the state's economy? 'Using Vermont's Past to Build a Better Future', the state's historic preservation plan, lays out a five-year framework for coordinated action towards valuing, championing, preserving, and using Vermont's historic resources and working landscapes to retain our revered sense of place and build a stronger future for Vermont. This is the business of historic preservation... 'Using Vermont's Past to Build a Better Future' maps a five-year (2011-2015) strategy for all Vermonters who believe its historic resources and working landscapes are critical to Vermont's futures. This plan reaches out to all Vermonters who love their state and want to maintain its unique character and spirit. Heritage stewardship results from many individual commitments and partners working together in a coordinated fashion. The plan provides ideas toward achieving these goals for all Vermonters who love this state's land and its special places. 'Using Vermont's Past to Build a Better Future' is a working plan from which we can derive inspiration for our heritage stewardship work and track our progress and accomplishments. The plan residents on the DHP web site at www.historicvermont.org. 'Using Vermont's Past to Build a Better Future" will bring us closer to achieving our shared vision for heritage stewardship in Vermont..." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Vermont State Historic Preservation Office, Department of Housing and Community Development, administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
