This section of the HABS manual concerns index cards. An HABS index card is a card containing information about a given structure, which is used primarily in the Library of Congress as a master finding list of HABS records in the Library. One is made out for each structure included in HABS; individual structures in a group are recorded separately (as Weikert House, Weikert Barn, Weikert Summer Kitchen). In some cases this card will be the only place in HABS a particular building is represented. The file of index cards in the Library of Congress will always be more complete than the printed catalogs, which become out of date as the collections grow.
