A Future for Ohio's Past: The Ohio Historic Preservation Plan 2003-2006

From the Introduction: "...A Future for Ohio's Past: The Ohio Historic Preservation Plan, was developed with the knowledge that preservation works best at the local level and that the Ohio Historic Preservation Office cannot be effective in carrying out its mission without the active participation of our many preservation partners. Therefore, the Ohio Historic Preservation Plan represents the diverse views and interests of preservationists across the state. The Plan has been revised and updated since it was first prepared. We have updated information about Ohio's historic properties, the trends affecting historic properties and the ways in which historic preservation works in Ohio. The new information resulted in a revised call for action that includes current goals and suggested actions at the federal, state, and local levels. The revised plan was reviewed by the staff of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office and the Ohio Historical Society, the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board and the organizations agencies represented at earlier public meetings. The public provided input via the draft document available at the Ohio Historical Society web site. The following chapters provide: a summary of the planning process; mission and goals of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office; Ohio trends that will affect these properties in the future; how historic preservation works at the local, regional and state levels and some preservation tools and incentives available to Ohioans; and actions that preservation organizations, local communities, historic property owners, volunteers and supporters may wish to adopt to address state and local preservation issue important to Ohio's future. The Ohio Historic Preservation Office has adopted this plan statement of policy and as our firm commitment to protect and preserve Ohio's historic resources. We hope that communities, organizations and all those who have a vested interested in preserving historic places will also endorse and embrace the Plan as common ground for historic preservation efforts across the state. This plan covers a period to the year 2006. At that time we will evaluate the usefulness of the plan and the progress made by individual and groups throughout Ohio in achieving its goals and objectives. That evaluation will mark the start of the planning process for Ohio's next historic preservation plan."
