Purpose and Applicability: "The purpose of the Comprehensive Statewide Historic Preservation Plan is to promulgate a vision and provide direction for historic preservation activities for the entire state of Mississippi, as well as provide direction for the state historic preservation office. The Plan contains goals and objectives that should serve to coordinate the actions and efforts of preservationists and others involved in preservation-related activities and concerns throughout the state. The Comprehensive Statewide Historic Preservation Plan is available to be used by any and all persons and groups involved in historic preservation in Mississippi. Because there is no statewide governmental planning system in Mississippi, there is no mechanism for adopting the Plan as a formal guideline for state government as a whole, or for agencies and local governments within the state, but their participation in the development, refinement, and implementation of the Plan is invited and encouraged. Participation on the part of private persons and organizations is, of course, voluntary, but the Department of Archives and History, as the coordinator of the Plan, invites and encourages their involvement as well, and particularly supports the involvement of those organizations most active in historic preservation in Mississippi." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Grant to the Mississippi Historic Preservation Division, Department of Archives & History, administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
