From The Planning Process: "...Planning is an invaluable tool to identify the major issues that affect preservation efforts around the state state. The funding of preservation projects, resource protection, public education, and increased intergovernmental coordination are just a few of the many issues facing Florida's preservationists today. The primary purpose of Florida's historic preservation plan is to provide guidance for the implementation of sound planning procedures for the location, identification, and protection of the state's archaeological and historic resources. Planning uses many tools, including economic and demographic analysis, natural and cultural resource evaluation, goal setting, and strategic planning. The development and implementation of a sound, well-coordinated comprehensive preservation plan should assist Florida's preservation organizations in their efforts to protect Florida's dwindling historic and archaeological resources. ...To assist in the development of a revised statewide preservation plan, individuals, organizations, and communities across the state were asked to identify critical preservation challenges and opportunities in Florida. Suggestions and comments were requested from other agencies and through a series of public meetings, questionnaires, and surveys. The responses received were considerable and helpful. This 2006-2010 edition 'Planning for the Past: Preserving Florida's Heritage was prepared from the insights and recommendations of hundreds of individuals, organizations, and business and governmental leaders. The objectives and strategies that emerged from this input convey what our historic preservation policy, goals, and values should be. The present preservation plan identifies and discusses the major economic, educational, environmental, political, and social issues and trends facing the state both now and in the future. 'Planning for the Past: Preserving Florida's Heritage (2006-2010)' is designed to guide Florida's preservation efforts for the next five years and will be disturbed to public and academic libraries, local governments, and key organizations. It will also be posted the Division's website. The State Historic Preservation Office will track implementation of and progress toward accomplishing each objective to establish the framework for the next five-year cycle. As historic historic preservation increasingly becomes a fundamental part of our lives and communities, there will be a greater sense of who are as Floridians, whether we have been here for generations or have just arrived in the Sunshine State. The goals and objectives included in the plan reflect the issues and opportunities available to Floridians as they plan for the preservation of our cultural heritage in the 21st century." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Florida Division of Historical Resources, Department of State, administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
