Overview: "The Kansas Historic Preservation Office (KHPO) is responsible for developing and helping to implement a strategic management plan that addresses the preservation of the state's historic and cultural resources. These resources include architectural, historic, and prehistoric properties. The plan's purpose is to identify the trends affecting and impacting historic and cultural resources so that informed decisions can be made about the management and care of these properties. The recommendations expressed in the plan are designed to be implemented by community groups, local governments, state and federal agencies, private businesses, and individuals. The idea of preservation partnerships is interwoven through the plan. Those partnerships, above anything else, will result in the full implementation of the plan." Planning Cycle: "In accordance with its five-year planning cycle, the KHPO has revised its 1995 statewide plan. As part of this process, the KHPO held seven public participation meeting across the state in May and June 2000. Citizens, groups, organizations, and agencies were encouraged to attend the meetings and express their opinions about the preservation of the state's historic and cultural resources. Ideas from these public participation meetings were merged with other ideas reflecting issues and problems affecting the state's historic and cultural resources. The draft document was shared with stakeholders for review and comment in October 2000. It is the intention of the KHPO that the revised plan will help to outline the future direction of preservation in Kansas. The revised plan will be reviewed every year to assess the accomplishment of the goals and will be revised again in 2005." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Kansas Historical Society administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, Nation Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
