The subject of grass seed germination of late successional species in intercanopy versus canopy soils was explored in an independent study within the broader framework of the ecological restoration project currently underway at Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico. The restoration project is focused on the re storation of the savanna system, once the natural ecosystem of this area. The study took place in a greenhouse. The following hypotheses were researched - Germination and establishment of late successional species will vary with respect to location (eroded intercanopy soils versus uneroded canopy soils). Sub-hypotheses: 1.1 Tree litter (needles from One-seed Juniper and Pinon Pine) inhibits germination of late successional species. 1.2 There will be differences among the three late successional species in their ability to germinate in these four environments. 1.3 Slash will ameliorate site conditions on intercanopy soils and facilitate establishment of the three late successional species.
