Hopewell Culture National Historical Park contains earthworks and burial mounds from the Hopewell culture, indigenous peoples who flourished from about 200 BC to AD 500. The Mound City Group is comprised of 24 restored conical burial mounds inside a sub-rectangular earthworks enclosure, outside of which are borrow pits and on the west side are two small additional conical mounds. The report states that the importance of Mound City Group lies in its being the most documented and best preserved earthwork necropolis remaining of the sites attributed to the Hopewell culture people. The report makes recommendations about the restoration and interpretation of the Mound City Group.
