Kalaupapa National Historical Park is located on Molokai in the Hawaiian Islands. It was established in order to preserve the story of the separation of victims of Hansen's disease from the general population. A fire protection need rating of the historic structures in the park is illustrated in this study. Estimated costs and a description of the methods used to arrive at conclusions and recommendations are provided. The historic structures in the park are all threatened to some degree by fire, and many structures have historically been lost to fire. The purpose of this study is to assist managers in setting priorities for protecting the historic structures with automatic fire detection and suppression systems. Protection for a minimum of 12 structures is recommended for an initial program. In accordance with NFS 50, Loss Control Management Guideline, all structures should, unless exempt, eventually receive automatic fire suppression systems.
