Part One of this report provides the historical data section for the historic structure report on the Howser House at Kings Mountain National Military Park, providing data on the history of the structural, its occupation, furnishings, and physical changes. The data has been organized into a report that is intended to provide architects with a structural history of the building and grounds, museum curators with data for the preparation of a furnishings plan, and interpreters with information on the cultural and social history of those who lived in the house. Part Two is the architectural data section, providing descriptive information on the present condition of the fabric of the Howser House and grounds, the sequence of changes made to the building, and alternative recommendations for restoration as called for in the planning directive for the historic structure report. Data gathered in the field is presented in measured drawings, photographs, and a written statement. It also includes a cost estimate and preliminary restoration drawings. The exterior of the Henry Howser House was proposed to be restored to its appearance ca. 1803. Terraces, retaining walls, the well, and outbuilding foundations will be restored. It is proposed that the first floor be restored to its ca. 1825 appearance and the second floor be adaptively restored as quarters for park personnel. While not associated with the Battle of Kings Mountain, the house is a significant cultural and architectural resource.
