This Historic Structures Report concerns the Guardhouse (Building H-22) at Fort Spokane. It is a historic building to be restored for use as a Visitor Center. The exterior and certain areas within the building were proposed to be restored to original condition for interpretive purposes. Other areas would be converted to administrative and public use. The report describes estimated costs of the proposed construction, historical data, architectural data, and illustrations. On December 21, 1891, Lt. Col. A. G. Robinson, Deputy Quartermaster General, United States Army and H. H. Plough and W. H. Jayne, Builders, entered into an agreement for the construction of a Guardhouse at Fort Spokane. The building was completed in 1892 at a cost of $5,240 and was the last major military construction at the fort. Abandoned by the military at the outbreak of the Spanish American War, the fort was transferred to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for use as an Indian boarding school and hospital. During this period the guardhouse was used as a workshop and for the storage of supplies. By the late 1920's the fort had fallen into almost complete disuse. Some stabilization had been accomplished since the NPS acquired the fort.
