The Historic Structure Report for the Martin Luther King Jr. Birth Home consists of three primary data sections - administrative, historical, and architectural. It was prepared during 1983-1984, by a number of authors and contributors. The purpose of the report is to give a detailed analysis of all building elements, their historic appearance and condition during the period of 1920-1943 when Martin Luther King occupied the house, and their present appearance and conditions. The report recommends the best way to protect and improve the building for interpretation and preservation. The Birth Home is located at 501 Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia, part of Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. It has three distinct periods of history: the initial building of the home until its purchase by Rev. A.D. Williams (1895-1908), the period when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lived in the house (1929-1941), and a period of renovation by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change in 1974.
