This document catalogs the more than 300 historic structures of the community that are now within the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site and Preservation District. This includes 501 Auburn Avenue, the house where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born, as well as other buildings on the avenue where he learned, worshipped, taught, and carried out some of his most important work for the civil rights movement. The inclusion of a large part of Sweet Auburn affords the opportunity to view Dr. King and the civil rights movement as an outgrowth of generations of prominent and successful Black business people, educators, entertainers, politicians, and professionals, and of the economic and social institutions they created. The book is intended to provide an ongoing record of structures at the site. It includes a photograph of each historic structure in its present condition, and also a historic photograph of the structure if available. There are also spaces for photographs of structures once they are restored or rehabilitated. The narratives accompanying each photograph briefly describe the history of the structures, but they are not intended to be a comprehensive discussion. The catalog of structures is organized into three parts that correspond to the national historic site and the two sections of the preservation district ("Sweet Auburn,” the commercial section, and "Old Fourth Ward,” the residential section). All the structures listed were built during the historic period and contribute to the overall historic fabric of the area. Although most of them are not nationally significant individually, when taken together they represent a cultural resource that is extremely important to Atlanta, the Southeast, and the United States.
