This report records the existing conditions of the Stone Bride at Manassas National Battlefield Park and requests approval to permit a structural examination to determine the extent of work proposed. It was prepared with the decision to rehabilitate the Stone Bridge around 1960, when EODC had field personnel at Manassas to begin on restoration of the Dogan and Stone Houses. The report describes the known structural history of the bridge. The story of early nineteenth century bridges of stone masonry in Northern Virginia is interwoven with the building of turnpike roads. The earliest known views or sketches of the bridge are photographs taken in March 1862, showing the remaining portion of the original bridge abutments after destruction in the First Battle of Manassas. It was assumed to have been rebuilt sometime between 1865 and 1880. The report describes the structure and materials and includes illustrations. It is proposed to restore the Stone Bridge to its pre-war appearance using the existing structure (reconstructed ca. 1880) as is basically appears. A brief Part I Historical Data Section for the Stone Bridge was prepared and submitted in March 1961.
