This report was prepared to record existing conditions of the Stone House prior to its proposed rehabilitation. Such a report is required before the architectural investigation of the structure. Later findings would be recorded in Part II of the Architectural Data Section. This report includes material already assembled by National Park Service personnel in the form of measured drawings, photographs, and historic material. It appears that the house was built by Wormly Carter about 1812-1815. The use of the Stone House as a tavern or ordinary may have had its beginning when the turnpike reached this point in 1828. Existing descriptions are described, organized by section of the house. It is proposed to restore the Stone House to its appearance at the time of the Civil War, 1981-1865, when it was used as a tavern and temporarily converted into a field hospital during the First and Second Battles of Manassas. The building would be used as an exhibit. It was hoped that the restoration would be completed before July 21,1961 so the Stone House could provide background scenery for re-enactment of the First Battle of Manassas in 1861.
