This report documents the ruins stabilization procedures used in preserving seven selected sites in Canyonlands National Park and Natural Bridges National Monument. Preliminary work was conducted in the fall of 1983 with the actual stabilization being conducted in the spring of 1984. The work was performed by personnel representing the archaeological consulting firm of Nickens and Associates. The work was performed under provisions of a multiyear ruins stabilization contract with the National Park Service, Rocky Mountain Region. This report serves to document Year 1. The contract work included stabilization efforts at the following locations: (Canyonlands) Paul Bunyan's Potty Tower Ruin Whitewash Ruin (Natural Bridges) Lightening House Ruin Horsecollar Ruin Kachina Bridge Ruin In addition, detailed stabilization assessments were conducted for Bighorn Sheep Ruin in Canyonlands and Bare Ladder Ruin. Archeological data were also collected at each ruin, which will be presented at the end of the multiyear project. This report provides thorough documentation of stabilization work at the sites, including methods and techniques, and provides numerous management-oriented recommendations for the future care and preservation of the ruins.
