Olszewski GJ. 1967. Dupont Circle, Washington D.C.. Historic Resource Study. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. Washington, D.C.

This study, prepared by the Division of History, Office of Archeology and Historic Preservation, addresses Dupont Circle in Washington, DC. It was designed to provide staff of the National Capital Region and Central National Capital Parks with a documented report, covering the legal origin and administrative history of Dupont Circle, developmental stages in its landscaping, and present value to the community. Specifically, it was designed to illustrate to historical significance of the park site to aid in its preservation. Dupont Park was recognized as the scene of demonstrations, gatherings reflecting nationwide social movements, and recent development. The major portion of the narrative is based on annual reports of the Chief of Engineers (1867 to 1925), annual reports of the Commissioner of Public Buildings and Grounds (1925-1933), and material from the correspondence files of the National Capital Region, Mall and Records Branch (1933-1967). It addresses the problems that have affected Dupont Circle since it came under administration of the National Park Service (1933) and the manner in which they were solved. National Mall and Memorial Parks (formerly known as National Capital Parks-Central) is an administrative unit of the National Park Service (NPS) encompassing many national memorials and other areas in Washington, D.C. Federally owned and administered parks in the capital area date back to 1790, some of the oldest in the United States. In 1933, they were transferred to the control of the National Park Service.
