This report presents the results of a nondestructive testing (NDT) program conducted on selected Vermont marble stones used in the walls, columns, and other exterior features of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the NDT investigation was to meet the following goals: • To provide a correlation between NDT test results and the results of a visual survey of stone conditions conducted previously; • To verify the applicability of a number of NDT methods to the various types of stones on the Memorial prior to any large scale investigation; • To recommend if and when further nondestructive testing of the building stone at the Memorial would be appropriate; • To quantify the extent of internal damage to selected cracked and damaged stones identified in the stone survey; and, • To determine whether any of the testing methods detect hidden internal damage not apparent through visual survey alone.
