This report is intended to present the methodology and findings of a movement monitoring survey of structural components of the skylight room (penthouse) in the Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC. The survey is intended to accurately determine the extent, magnitude and direction of "thermal movement" detected during an earlier study conducted in 1989-1990. And, this report is intended to paint a preliminary picture about the movement of larger areas of the penthouse structure based on the recordings taken at numerous points in the room. However, it is premature at this time to attempt to resolve the full significance of detected movement in terms of the structural condition of the penthouse and roof and the historic fabric of the Memorial in general. The present monitoring covered only a limited time period (four months) rather than an annual seasonal cycle which would include the full temperature extremes acting on the building. Thus, this present study should be considered the first step in a longer-term monitoring program using high precision instrumentation. Observations from this short-term study and those from long-term monitoring studies which may follow, can then provide a complete and meaningful analysis of the condition of the Memorial penthouse area. At that time it will be possible to determine whether intervention, if any, is needed.
