Fixed Point Fire Detection, The Lookouts [DRAFT]

Thornton MV. 1986. Fixed Point Fire Detection, The Lookouts [DRAFT]. Historic Structure Report. United States Forest Service

This paper is a follow up to and revision of a preliminary report which was issued in January of 1985. The purpose of the report is to establish a foundation upon which a management plan for the inventory and evaluation of lookout structures can be developed, pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The report is divided into four sections: Part one recounts the historical evolution of fire lookouts. Part two describes the classification system for delineating structure types. Part three details a proposed historic significance evaluation methodology. Part four is a statistical abstract of information gathered over the past three years concerning currently standing structures. Finally, a glossary and master inventory is included. The research in this report is limited to the history of lookouts in California.
