Katmai National Park has been using time-lapse photography to document temporal and spatial patterns of bear use at selected brown bear foraging areas since 2004. In general, cameras are installed overlooking areas with concentrated bear use and take photos at regular intervals over the course of the season (generally May through September). The photos are later processed to identify objects of interest (primarily bears, but also people, boats and planes) and gather XY location information for each object within the photo frame. This information, combined with date, time and tide information, is used to describe bear use (and visitor use where applicable) in relation to day-of-year, time-of-day and tide stage. Comparisons between years can also be made. At sites with human visitation, bear use can be further investigated in relation to human presence.
