2010. Final Project Outline Report Fiscal Year 2008 Special Project - Palau National Register of Historic Places Project #2: In-house Nomination and Identification of Highly Significant Properties. Summary of Achievements: "The nomination and registration of 10 sites per year is ambitious however the actual human resource needed to gather information and proper paper work is absent. The significant sites proposed (12 significant sites) for FY '08 carefully evaluated by the Board. The Board conducted two official meeting on Jan. 18, 2020 and May 13, 2010 to evaluate all the nominees for inclusion on the register. The Board approved three (3) sites and deferred nine (9). It was discovered during the preparation of the nomination that site or properties located on private land owned by a single, multiple, or clan group were not aware that their property is being considered to be included on the register. It became apparent that registering 10 properties per year is beyond the capabilities of the Registrar without enough staff support. The number was reduced to five nominations with at least two or three approved sites. A major issue needing attention is the goal percent of registered sites. To date, there are 182 sites on the Palau Register, mainly on Babeldaob. Should there be a percent of registered sites i.e. 30 percent terrestrial and 20 percent marine. If such proposal is taken into consideration, the Board needs to reevaluate the sites already listed on the register to determine their eligibility. Majority of the sites listed on the register are located on private lands which no record of landowner concurrence to register the property in the register." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Palau Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Arts and Culture, Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number 70-08-21762).
