Final Project Summary: "Both of the buildings that are the subject of this report are of the utmost historical significance in telling the story of the 1944 Battle of Peleliu and its aftermath. The preservation of the buildings necessitates important interventions for which time is of the essence. Removal and on-going control of vegetation continues to a top priority. Water management in the form of a new protective roof for the Museum was a major accomplishment of this site visit. The limited repair, shoring and vegetation removal at the Air Headquarters was also an important step in the long-term preservation of this most significant resource. The exhibit and interpretation recommendations of this report will tell a more complete and interesting story. They will hopefully hold the attention of the visitor for a lengthy duration and create a more meaningful experience. This enhanced experience should result in increased visitation and support for the amazing history of Peleliu! We are now at a critical juncture in the life-cycle of the buildings. When reinforced concrete buildings such as these reach 70 to 75 years old and are subject to long-deferred maintenance, they typically exhibit ever-accelerating deterioration. At this point, the carbonation of the concrete will have reached the reinforcement in many areas. If the recommended preservation approach is initiated soon, there is an opportunity to dramatically extend the life of these buildings. Delay in applying protective measures will increase the risk of losing the buildings to decay and, with them, an irreplaceable link to the globally significant events which they so powerfully represent."
