Unrau HD. 2014. Historic Structure Report: Dam No. 6 and its Related Structures. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
This Historic Structure Report was prepared to satisfy the research needs for the stabilization and preservation of Dam Number 6 and its associated structures. The project was an effort to provide a thorough historic study of the Dam No. 6 complex to ensure that historically correct procedures would be followed in preserving the structures from further deterioration. The report documents the construction and history of the structures, including the damage and repairs that resulted in significant alterations. Dam No. 6 stretched across the Potomac River about ten miles above Hancock, Maryland. The contract for the construction of the dam was let in September of 1836, and the structures were completed by late summer of 1838. This 2014 edition of the original report was created by volunteers at the C&O Canal NHP Headquarters Library in 2014, who transcribed the text, proofread, and formatted it for distribution. It also includes an updated photographic section. The "Recommendations" section of the original document, as well as some of the illustrations and photographs, were not included in this edition. The Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal is a flat water canal, chartered in 1825. Construction began in 1828. Dams were constructed across the river at seven locations in order to impound a portion of the river’s water and provide its diversion into the canal at regular intervals. Dam 6 contributes to the National Register under Criteria A and C for its architecture, engineering, commerce, transportation, conservation & military history, period of significance (1828–1924).
