This handbook describes maintenance criteria and guidelines for the formulation of realistic programs that will meet the needs and uses of the landscape, focusing on parks comprising the National Capital Region. It provides some of the technical knowledge that is required in the performance of the maintenance tasks, but that material has been condensed. Much of the data is based on the experience gained in maintaining the landscape of a metropolitan park system. The handbook addresses broad topics of maintenance management, such as the functions of planning, organizing, directing, and controlling activities to meet objectives. It also includes specific details and guidelines on topics including vegetation management zones, soil management, turf management, planting and culture of trees, pest management, meadow management, and irrigation. Sample specifications are included as an appendix, intended to be modified to a park's specific needs. This edition is an update to the first edition of the Park Landscape Maintenance Handbook that was prepared in 1966 incorporating concerns and technology contemporary to the time. It was intended to be a reference to provide information to maintenance managers, rather than serving as a how-to guide.
