SUMMARY: On November 18, 2015, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Division of Water Resources (DWR) entered into an agreement with the United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Permit # GRSM-2015-SCI-1257, to collect ground water data from several wells in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). These wells have been included into North Carolina’s statewide monitoring well network as individual monitoring stations. The purpose of this permit is to allow DWR to collect depth to ground water measurements for the primary purpose of assessing how climatic conditions impact ground water supplies, how these climatic conditions affect base flow to streams and rivers, and to assess these data and their relationship to drought conditions in the mountain physiographic province of North Carolina. The following summarizes work performed from January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020 in accordance with the referenced permit.
