Preface: "This report is a compilation of archival inventories, including published and unpublished sources, regarding Ngatpang and its oral history. A significant source is Augustine Kramer's five volume ethnography about Palau, which was recently translated in 2015. His ethnography provides a rich view of Palau's past beginning in early 1900s. Significant descriptions about each village district can be found in Kramer Volume II, while legends can be found in Volume IV. Kramer Volume III captures major divisions of Palau material culture and has a detailed description of pottery making in Ngatpang. Lastly, Volume V includes illustrations of bai (chief's meeting house) and immul (beams) images of legends from Ngatpang. According to Inventory of Cultural and Historical Sites and Oral Histories of Ngatpang State (2005) Ngatpang is divided into four regions for documentary purposes. They are Ngereklemadel, Ngimis, Ngerdubech, and Ngetmich. This report has been formatted to follow these divisions. Oral histories collected from previous field work and reports as well as additional archival materials are structured into these four regional divisions. The present study should by no means be considered exhaustive; it is a survey intended to produce basic information about Ngatpang and give interested individuals and researchers a baseline and starting point for further research and reading."
