The Tumacacori National Monument Visitor Center complex was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 as a nationally significant example of Mission Revival architecture. Its significance is also based on its having been uniquely designed as an interpretive device. The complex has undergone only minor changes during its sixty-two years of use as interpretive center, exhibit space, and administrative offices. The history of the Tumacacori Visitor Center Complex starts six years before the construction of the museum building, which was begun in 1937. The early evolution of the planning and design of the building, then called the Museum, is important because it expresses changing trends in National Park Service ideas about interpretation, about architecture in parks, and to some extent, about historic preservation. The design and construction histories are detailed in this Historic Structure Report (HSR). Part 1 of this HSR, the Developmental History, documents the evolution of the whole group of features making up the complex: the Visitor Center building, comfort station, garden, and enclosing walls. The history incorporates drawings and photographs, and is based on both documentary research and physical examination. Part 2, Treatments, describes problems at the time of publication and proposes and evaluates recommended treatments. The sources for the data compiled in this HSR include maps, plats, architectural and construction drawings, historic photographs, records in park files and WACC, and published sources about the context.
