Pre-restoration Monitoring of Fecal Coliform Bacteria in the lower Herring River, Wellfleet MA

Portnoy JW. Pre-restoration Monitoring of Fecal Coliform Bacteria in the lower Herring River, Wellfleet MA. Research Permit and Reporting System

Fecal coliform bacteria (FC) become concentrated around tidal restrictions, in the case of the Herring River (Wellfleet MA) dike causing the closure of extensive downstream shellfish beds. In 2005, the National Park Service studied FC in the lower Herring River in anticipation of a project to restore tides and estuarine habitats throughout the Herring River estuary. That survey has been repeated in 2020 with generally similar findings. See attached final report.
