The Statue of Liberty National Monument is a United States National Monument comprising Liberty Island and Ellis Island in the U.S. states of New Jersey and New York. It includes the Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World) by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and the Statue of Liberty Museum, both situated on Liberty Island, as well as the former immigration station at Ellis Island which includes the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital. In accordance with the provisions of Contract No. CX-1600-6-0025, North Atlantic Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, entitled "Seawall Rehabilitation and Walk Repairs, Ellis Island, New Jersey", URS/Madlgan-Praeger, Inc. has made an above and below water survey of the condition of the existing seawall and perimeter walk on Ellis Island, determined the cause of the observed deterioration, and recommends, herein, necessary repairs. Estimates of the cost of the repair work are presented. Conditions which prompted the commissioning of this report include the loss of face stones from various locations along the seawall (photos 1 to 3); settlements and displacement of certain portions of the seawall, including partial collapse (photos 4 to 6); and the formation of sinkholes in planted and paved areas behind the wall (photos 7 to 9). There are, as well, numerous, lesser defects (referred to, herein, as minor maintenance items).
