he National Park Service Southeast Coast Network (SECN) in cooperation with the City of Jacksonville, Florida jointly monitor water-quality within Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve’s boundaries to provide relevant water-quality information to local resource managers. Monitoring locations consist of thirteen sites; twelve of which are sampled every other month by the City of Jacksonville for nutrients and chlorophyll a, and one additional site is monitored continuously by the Southeast Coast Network for dissolved oxygen, pH, specific conductance, temperature, turbidity and water level. Fixed-station water-quality monitoring at Timucuan is part of the SECN Inventory & Monitoring (I&M) Program, which routinely collects data at seven coastal park units located along the southeastern U.S. Summary findings below are based on continuous data and bimonthly discrete sampling collected during 1 January 2015–31 December 2016. • Continuous data were collected at one fixed-station site (TIMUking) by the Southeast Coast Network. • Mean monthly dissolved oxygen concentrations were good throughout the entire year, ranging from a low of 5.3 mg/L in September 2015 to a high of 8.6 mg/L in February 2016. Individual dissolved oxygen concentrations ranged from 2.9 mg/L in May 2015 to 9.6 mg/L on mulitple occasions. • Mean monthly pH values ranged from a low of 7.8 multiple times to a high of 8.0 on mulitple occasions with very little variability throughout the year. Individual pH levels ranged from 7.5 to 8.2. • Monthly mean turbidity values ranged from 54.4 FNUs in September 2015 to 14.7 FNUs in October 2016. Individual turbidity readings ranged from 0 FNUs in September 2015 to 75.0 FNUs in October 2016. • Mean monthly water temperatures ranged from 13.0 ºC (55.4 ºF) in February 2015 to 30.3 ºC (86.5 ºF) in July 2016. Individual temperature readings ranged from 9.1 ºC (48.4 ºF) in January 2014 to 31.9 ºC (89.4 ºF) in July 2014. • The tidal range for site TIMUking was approximately 3.12 meters (10.2 feet). Monthly water-quality data (discrete samples) were collected at twelve sites by the City of Jacksonville, Florida near the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve during 2015–2016, for a total of seventy-six sampling events which reflected a wide range of conditions. Not all parameters were measured at every sampling event. • Water clarity (sixty-six measurements total) was mostly good (thirty-eight samples), with sixteen fair readings, and twelve poor readings. The poor readings were at sites TIM01 through TIM06. • Dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations (fifty-seven total samples) were good for a majority of the samples (fifty-one), and fair for six. • Dissolved inorganic phosphorus concentrations (severnty-five samples were mostly fair (thirty-five). There were nineteen poor samples and twenty-one good samples. • Chlorophyll a concentrations (sixty-five samples) were good for twenty-one samples, fair for forty-three samples, and one poor sample (TIM01). • Discrete dissolved oxygen samples (sixty) across the twelve sites were fair (twenty-eight samples) and good (thirty-two samples).
