Olsudong R, Emesiochel CT, Mersai C, Kloulechad ET. 2011. Inventory of Historic Properties in Melekeok State, Republic of Palau. Palau Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Arts and Culture, Ministry of Community & Cultural Affairs
Introduction: "This inventory is based on information collected from prior archaeological investigations conducted beginning in the early 20th century, two surveys conducted by the Bureau of Arts and Culture in 1997 and 2008, archival research and contemporary interviews. All twelve regions of Melekeok State are represented. The information is organized in order by region. All surveys in Palau follow the traditional north to south, east to west movement pattern and this is evident with the numbering and location of the twelve regions here. A representative sample of photographs illustrating the sites recorded, and the detailed site forms follow the section in two appendices. Under the Melekeok State constitution, the State recognizes six contemporary villages. From north to south, these are Ngeburch, Ngeruliang, Ngermelech, Melekeok, Ngerang, and Ngerubesang. The settlements moved to the coastal area from inland during the Japanese administration (1914-1945). The asphalt road (Compact Road) skirts the coast from Ngeruliang to Ngerubesang. For the purposes of this inventory, the state is divided into the 12 traditional regions: Ngerubesang; Melekeok; Ngerang; Ngermelech; Ngeruliang; Ngeburch; Oliuch; Blisang; Ngeorai; Ngerdok; Ngerulmud; and Elbraiku. These traditional regions, unlike the contemporary villages, comprise the entire land area of Melekeok State. Traditional regions were chosen instead of contemporary villages in order to conduct a comprehensive survey of all accessible land within each state boundary." Project funding was provided by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Palau Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Arts and Culture, Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
