2009. Final Project Outline Report Fiscal Year 2008 Special Project - Oral History and Ethnography Project #3: Final Printing of Oral History Report of Melekeok State. Palau Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Arts and Culture, Ministry of Community & Cultural Affairs

From the Summary: "The staff of the Oral History and Ethnography Section carried out the In-house Ethnographic 'Final Printing of Oral History Report of Melekeok State.' Ms. Sylvia Kloulubak, a Historic Preservation Specialist I, with close supervision of Cultural Anthropologist/Ethnographer Ms. Kelly G. Marsh, M.A./Ph.D. candidate conducted the editing, formatting, and finalizing of the 'Melekeok State Report Vol. II including the Life Histories of Elders and WWII Experiences in Melekeok State.' ...In its final form, the 'Melekeok State Report Vol. II including the Life Histories of Elders and WWII Experiences in Melekeok State' presented oral histories and/or other knowledge about 18 of the 25 areas in Melekeok identified by the BAC Survey and Inventory/Archaeology Section as needing oral history documentation. No oral history or other knowledge was able to be collected for seven sites. The fact that there were several sites for which oral history was not able to be collected underscores the importance of our work in collecting what exists today before even more oral history is lost. The report shared the life histories of 61 Elders who are associated with Melekeok State and 26 of their World War II experiences. All of the sections mentioned above were able to provided in both the Palauan and English languages. The data in the demographic changes section of the report was obtained from the original 37 informants who were identified as important Elders to gain oral history and World War II experiences from during the 2008 state oral history survey process. Working on this project provided the opportunity for the Historic Preservation Specialist I and the Historic Preservation Specialist Assistant to gain hands on experience in formatting and finalizing a digital copy of a sizable report. Despite several minor and major challenges encountered, the project was successfully completed on time. It produced the report entitled, ' Melekeok State Report Vol. II including the Life Histories of Elders and WWII Experiences of Melekeok State (2008).'" Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Palau Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Arts and Culture, Ministry of Community & Cultural Affairs, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number 70-08-21762).
