Historic Structure Preservation Guide for The Russian Bishop's House

Sitka National Historical Park (earlier known as Indian River Park and Totem Park) is a national historical park in Sitka in the U.S. state of Alaska. It was redesignated as a national historical park from its previous status as national monument on October 18, 1972. The park in its various forms has sought to commemorate the Tlingit and Russian experiences in Alaska. This Historic Structure Preservation Guide (HSPG) has been prepared in compliance with the "National Park Service Cultural Resources Management Guidelines (NPS-28)," which requires that such a document be prepared when a historic structure has received its ultimate treatment. The purpose of this guide is to provide maintenance personnel with an information base for budgeting and performing routine and cyclic maintenance of the historic Russian Bishop's House. It is intended that this structure be kept well maintained, clean, and attractive to visitors. Although the building is kept quite clean, through interpretation it will be explained that historically the building was not maintained as it is today. Visual inspection will be the primary tool for determining when maintenance of the historic scene is required. The maintenance treatments proposed in this guide have been carefully chosen for the optimum authenticity of appearance and serviceability. Deviations from the requirements of this document would, more than likely, destroy or alter the careful attention that has gone into the restoration work, as well as the preservation of historic fabric and original workmanship.
