The islands of Micronesia have been visited and ruled by many powers in the last couple hundreds of years. Throughout their experiences with these foreign powers, the islands and islanders have been influenced deeply and changed immensely. In the early nineteenth century, the influence of the Spanish colonial power was varied throughout the islands of Micronesia; in general, the eastern Marshall and Caroline Islands showed more of an impact of European exploration, trade, and rule than islands further west like Yap and Palau. In the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the German administration, and to a greater extent the Japanese administration that followed, modernized the islands, creating or expanding industries, forming towns, and building infrastructure. Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Federated States of Micronesia Historic Preservation Program, FSM National Government, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
