Tia Seu Lupe ('pigeon catching mounds') were the location of sporting events between chiefs to catch the most pigeons. In pigeon catching season (June to October), the villages would travel to the starmounds and watch the sport, which was widely enjoyed. However, with the arrival of Christian missionaries, the practice died out, as the missionaries believed it frivolous and taking away too much time from school and work. Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the American Samoa Historic Preservation Office, Executive Offices of the Governor, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
