In September of 2019, the National Park Service contracted with Lord Aeck Sargent and Bennett Preservation Engineering PC, as a subcontractor, for site visits, a structural investigation, detailed recommendations for treatment, and a Class "C" Cost Estimate for structural issues at the demilune at Fort Pulaski National Monument. The primary concerns noted by the National Park Service focused on cracking, shifting, and deterioration of the east retaining wall along the main north-south pathway through the demilune and on similar problems within the magazines. Secondary issues concerned settlement, erosion, and drainage, minor cracking and delamination of stone, deterioration of finishes, and deterioration of metal elements, particularly ferrous metal. In order to help with the effort, the National Park Service provided Bennett Preservation Engineering with copies of several historic construction drawings, a 2014 Historic Structure Report (HSR), and a number of historic photographs. Staff members of Bennett Preservation Engineering have visited Fort Pulaski numerous times, with the most recent visits focused exclusively on evaluation of the bridges and demilune. This report contains Bennett Preservation Engineering’s findings, conclusions, and recommendations, as well as a cost estimate for the recommended work.
