This project was designed to help park managers better understand the susceptibility of select slopes in the park to failure (e.g., rockfall, landslide), and inform management decisions on priority mitigation needs to minimize risk to park staff, visitors, and park assets. The project will assess the condition of select slopes in the park and the probability to failure through evaluating the unique blend of park geologic strata, geologic structure, soils, erosion, slope drainage, and slope failure history. The project work is in parntership with the Federal Highway Administation. The Federal Highway Administration’s Western Federal Lands Highway Division, with support from the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management, has developed a process and guidance (Unstable Slope Management Program (USMP) rating protocol) for assessing slopes at risk to failure through natural processes.
