A National Register of Historic Places Registration Form for the Brandon South College Street Historic District Narrative Description Summary Paragraph: "The Brandon South College Street Historic District consists of residential, religious, and educational buildings located along South College Street and intersecting streets. There are 45 contributing resources and 1 contributing site, along with 19 non-contributing resources, and 12 previously listed properties. Of those previously listed, one residence is listed individually, while the remaining properties are listed as part of the South College Street Historic District (1998)., which is completely encompassed within the proposed Brandon College Street Historic District. The resources of the district are primarily residential, but also include some religious and educational properties. The period of significance for the Brandon South College Street Historic District is 1832 to 1968. The architectural styles represented in the district follow a pattern typical of a small Mississippi courthouse town that was founded in the early nineteenth century and grew slowly through the late twentieth century, when it sprawled out as a suburb of the capital city, Jackson. The earliest homes display influences of the Greek Revival style, and the district is dotted with examples of almost every architectural style from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century: Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, Tudor Revival, Minimal Traditional, and Ranch styles. One of two historic churches is Gothic Revival. The educational buildings were built from the mind-twentieth century to the present, with the early buildings in the International and Art Moderne styles." Statement of Significance Summary Paragraph: "The Brandon South College Street Historic District in Brandon, Rankin County, Mississippi is significant at the local level under National Register Criterion A in the area of Community and Development and Criterion C in the area of Architecture. The period of significance for the district is 1832, the date of the district's earliest extant property, to 1968 when the district's small-town evolution ceased due to the rise of suburban developments brought about because of the expansion of Interstate 20 through the county. The collection of resources within the district represents the development of Brandon from its beginnings in the early nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century. The district displays a spectrum of architectural styles popular from the 1830s to the 1960s and encompasses a range of resources built in Brandon during the historic period which retain historic integrity. Within the nominated district boundary is the South College Street District listed in 1998, which contains five residential properties. The period of significance for that district was identified as c. 1850 to 1940. The proposed district is south of the Downtown Brandon Historic District which is comprised of mainly commercial properties. The proposed district is mainly residential with a mix of religious and educational properties. The land around Brandon was rich in timber which allowed the town to thrive as an agricultural center in the county. The district's resources are significant both in relation to the development of the two and for their architectural and artistic merit."
