This study is intended as a guide to historic preservation research and planning in order to facilitate the compatible development of Skagway's resources. It provides data on historic buildings and sites in Skagway, presented in the context of an active, modern community. The study recognizes the importance of integrating historic buildings into the larger designs of the community. Part I shows Skagway's rapid growth during the period from 1884 to 1912, providing a glimpse of the historic era when Skagway emerged as a gold rush boom town to become the major city in the District of Alaska. Part II reviews the architectural development in Skagway and looks at some of the buildings and their particular characteristics. This section partially explains why Skagway at the time of this report looks as it does. Part III is a summary of Skagway's preservation of objects and structures. A compilation of information about specific structures with a capsule history of each building in the district can be found in the appendix. The study aims to help people understand early Skagway life and to assist planners, private and public property owners, and preservationists to restore historic buildings with a sense of the town's heritage. The report was prepared as a cooperative effort of the Cooperative Park Studies Unit, University of Alaksa, Fairbanks, and the Alaska Regional Office of the National Park Service.
