This Handbook addresses the topic of stabilizing and maintaining prehistoric sites. It is primarily focused on prehistoric masonry structures. From the standpoint of Southwestern archeological structures, it is of value to examine their structural faults and then to consider the forces that contribute to their deterioration before effective measures can be taken. This acknowledges the conflicting objectives of preserving authenticity or irregular construction and permanence. Part 2, Field Methods, contains information about experiments with stabilization experiments, techniques, and methods of recordation. It was intended to directly aid crews in the field with stabilization problems. Part 1, dealing with history, policies, and definitions, was planned for release at a later date.
