The identification, evaluation, and management of cultural and historic landscapes was just beginning to be part of the planning process for National Parks. The purpose of this manual is to introduce basic concepts, guidelines, and criteria for identifying, evaluating, and managing cultural landscapes in national parks. It suggests that the guidelines be applied with the understanding of the limitations which may arise when focusing on a specific landscape. As with other means of understanding cultural resources, each cultural landscape demands its own tools for this work, and this manual is meant to serve as a basis for developing those tools. The manual addresses three questions: - What are the material components of a culturaI landscape, and how can they be identified? - Which aspects of the cultural landscape are significant and by what criteria can they be evaluated? - Which guidelines should be followed in managing a cultural landscape? The study was conducted by the Department of Landscape Architecture, College of Architecture and Design, Kansas State University. Examples used in this report are from Buffalo National River in Arkansas, which served as a case study.
