Moving a historic building is a delicate operation; it should not be undertaken until all other possible ways to save a structure from demolition have been investigated. This report has been prepared to serve as a guide for just such a situation. Its aim is to explain the precautions to take, and to suggest procedures to follow during the relocation process that will cause the least damage to the character and historic fabric of the building. This publication was developed by the Technical Preservation Services Division, Office of Archeology and Historic Preservation, Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service, as part of a Preservation Handbook series for use by architects, administrators, and government officials at all levels concerned with the preservation and maintenance of cultural resources.
