Abstract: "Charles W. Bates was one of the prominent architects of West Virginia in the early 20th century. He was trained in architecture and structural engineering in Chicago, and he practiced architecture in Wheeling from 1908 until his death in 1931. Bates designed commercial, educational, theater, recreational, religious, industrial and residential buildings. His Chicago training was reflected in his non-residential buildings, many of which were executed in the Neo-Classical Revival and Beaux Arts styles. Bates specialized in educational facilities, and he designed over 50 schools in West Virginia and Ohio. He also designed a number of factory and warehouse buildings for the many industries in the Wheeling area. His residential designs were in the Tudor/English Revival, Craftsman, Bungalow, Prairie and Neo-Classical Revival styles. Charles W. Bates designed some of the most prominent and acclaimed buildings in Wheeling, and his work continues to be valued and appreciated."
