The tectonic origin and chronology of the uplift of the Olympic Peninsula remain poorly understood, leaving an important gap in our understanding of the growth of North American topography. We explored the chronology of uplift of the Mountain range by studying the evolution of past river networks, recorded in sedimentary rocks. We showed that the uplift of the Olympic Peninsula started between 16 and 13 million years ago, isolating the Puget Sound from the Pacific.
