Nutrient diffusing substrata (NDS) are often used to help determine limiting nutrients in freshwaters because they provide a simple and cost-effective method for determining the nutrients that limit algal growth. USGS deployed NDS at 3 locations on the Buffalo River in 2020. Results suggest that at the time of this experiment that both N and P were limited in the Buffalo River.
