Standard Operating Procedure SET05: Mangrove Elevation Monitoring—Version 1.1
Whelan KR and Prats MC. 2021. Standard Operating Procedure SET05: Mangrove Elevation Monitoring—Version 1.1. National Park Service
The following standard operating procedure (SOP) outlines the process of using the rod-surface elevation table (RSET) to monitor mangrove soil surface elevation change in South Florida/Caribbean Network (SFCN) parks. The SOP was taken with very few modifications from the Southeast Coast Network SOP Salt Marsh Elevation Monitoring (Asper and Curtis 2013). That document outlined procedures adapted from the sampling method developed by Cahoon et al. (2002) and Folse and West (2004). The sampling methodology is also thoroughly explained on the Surface Elevation Table (SET) site hosted through the United States Geological Survey (USGS) website (Cahoon and Lynch 2003). These references give an excellent overview of how the sampling occurs, but note that the following standards are written for the collection of data as a part of the South Florida/Caribbean Network Vital Signs Monitoring Program.
