Appomattox Court House National Historical Park wishes to document the history, development and condition of the Plunkett‐Meeks Store complex, located along the Richmond‐Lynchburg Stage Road in Appomattox Court House. The building is intimately associated with the events of April 8‐9, 1865 leading up to the surrender by General Robert E. Lee of the Army of Northern Virginia to the Union forces led by Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. Today it serves as an interpretation of a mid‐19th century general store and provides office space for Park Service staff on the second story. As a basis for planning upcoming projects, the National Park Service commissioned the preparation of this Historic Structure Report by John Milner Architects, Inc. (Project No. APCO ‐ PMIS 151852B) with sub‐consultant Keast & Hood Structural Engineers, Inc. The scope of work for this project is to document the evolution of the structure through archival research and physical investigations, culminating in the preparation of a Historic Structures Report, as defined in Director’s Order – 28, Chapter 8. Part 1 of the report will “identify and document the original appearance, integrity, and historic evolution of the building; identify the 1865 appearance and extant 1865 and pre‐1865 architectural materials and character‐defining features.” Part 2 of the report is intended to guide the preservation, use and interpretation of the Plunkett‐Meeks Store in the 21st century. In order to fulfill these requirements, the following primary tasks were completed: • Archival research to retrieve information regarding the chain of ownership of the Plunkett‐ Meeks property, • Archival research to retrieve information pertinent to reconstructing the evolution of the building and its dependencies, • Archival research pertinent to assessing the significance of the building and its dependencies, • Assessment of existing conditions to identify and prioritize recommended treatments, • Documentation of exposed building components and systems.
