This Historic Structure Report concerns the Whitinsville Spinning Ring Company Mill Complex. The Whitinsville Spinning Ring Company Mill Complex is located in Whitinsville, Massachusetts on the south side of the Mumford River. The site is comprised of 1.03 acres of land with a cluster of ten extant structures. The site is bounded on the north by the Stone Mill Pond (Mumford River), on the east by the Stone Mill Pond Dam (and the stone bridge), on the south by Douglas Road and on the west by property of the Whitin Machine Works. The purpose of the National Park Service’s participation in this project is to provide three critical sections of a Historic Structure Report for the Whitinsville Spinning Ring Company Mill Complex (hereafter Mill Complex). The three sections of the report provided here are; 1). Historical Background and Context, 2). Chronology of Development and Use, and 3). Character-defining Features. These three sections constitute a Part I. Developmental History according to National Park Service standards. An overview of the site and brief introduction to the buildings of the complex precedes the Historical Background section to orient the reader. Additional parts of the Historic Structure Report including Existing Conditions and Recommendations will be completed by the staff at Austin Architects. The Whitinsville Spinning Ring Company Mill Complex Historic Structure Report will be used as a baseline to understand the development of the site over time and will help to place the site within the broader trends and contexts of local and national industrial history. Alternatives Unlimited, Inc. plans to rehabilitate the mill complex as a mixed-use facility combining an affordable housing component, community recreation spaces, offices, interpretive exhibits, retail and restaurant features and a theater/arts center.
