The Sandy Hook area of Gateway National Recreation Area is a sand spit of approximately 1,700 acres that extends north from central, coastal New Jersey into New York Bay. Bordered to the east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by Sandy Hook Bay, the National Park lies at the northern end of New Jersey's barrier beach system, in Monmouth County. The Sandy Hook Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters, a National Historic Landmark, along with the lighthouse, is located on this narrow strip of land, along with the Fort Hancock and Anny Proving Ground national historic districts. The Sandy Hook Lighthouse was constructed in 1764. The current Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters, which is located adjacent to and slightly southwest of the lighthouse, is the fourth, or possibly the fifth, dwelling to be built on the site since the Revolutionary War period. The purpose of this Historic Structure Report is to document the existing conditions at the Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters and to make general recommendations regarding the future use and treatment of this valuable resource. As described by the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office, the goal of an HSR is to "assess and guide the effects of a proposed treatment or construction related capital project on the existing fabric of a property." This document will serve as a planning tool, on which to base future decisions regarding the many uses proposed for the building.
